Responding to Major Emergencies

From fire to flooding or the risk of nuclear calamity to terrorist attack, the Avon & Somerset area is as vulnerable as any other part of the country.

When disaster strikes there is a unique rôle for faith communities in the provision of care, comfort and support for victims. Tried and tested, the Avon and Somerset Faith Communities' Major Emergency Plan exists to provide that response whenever and wherever it may be needed. During February of 2014, trained volunteers from the faith communities provided 24/7 support for victims of the Somerset floods. Our involvement continued during February, March and April.

Each year, with team members retiring or leaving the area, we welcome new volunteers. Participation in the plan is open to leaders of faith communities or their nominated representatives. Introductory days are held each year for potential volunteers to familiarise themselves with the plan and explore the various opportunities for involvement.
The Familiarisation Day on Thursday 23rd March will provide an opportunity for prospective volunteers to learn more about the major emergency plan and, if they wish, to register for the scheme. There is no charge for the training and, if you wish to join the team, you will not be under any obligation to respond to a particular incident.

To book your place 23rd March, please complete and return the booking form, or for further information email me at or phone me on 07919 401 777. I'd be delighted if you're able to join me for this 'taster' day. Refreshments and a buffet lunch will be provided.
Best regards
Andy
