WSM Newsletter - JULY 2012

Your quick fire WSM news - On the run!

Wow! Strap yourselves in for a massive summer of sports outreach in the UK with the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games now just days away. Over 3,000 churches throughout the land are doing something to impact others thanks to the passion and drive of partners within the More Than Gold network. Here at WSM it's an exciting time with Community Sports Teams delivering strategies and reaching out despite the rain! Here are some highlights and prayer requests for what's ahead.

Proclaiming
June was huge in the west country:
 - 5 adult outreach tournaments, including: men's 5 a side football, Teen 5 a side, Touch Rugby, Ladies netball.
-  2 large festivals in Bath reaching over 6,000 people with sports zones included - we got to give out over 400 testimony booklets to sporty participants.
-  6 Olympic related school missions called 'The Games' sharing Jesus with over 850 children.

Jesus cares and connects - Jacob's story
During one of 'The Games' school missions, a young boy called Jacob initially did what he often does, he drew away from the group seemingly unwilling to participate in the creative musical zone with the other children; then the music started - 'He's got the whole world in His hands.' Astonishingly, nobody knew the sone...except Jacob who not only came out from under the table to sing, but ended up standing in front of the group demonstrating the actions. For the rest of that day, God had got Jacob's attention and he joined in, had fun and heard the great news of how special he is and accepted by Jesus - just like Zacchaeus!

Due Season - Callum's story!
Callum had been reached since the age of 8 in school by a WSM coach, attended sports camp and then chose to join our Youth Sports Leadership programme; despite plenty of 'good seed' being sown, Callum had never fully committed to Jesus; then whilst serving as a young leader on a children's sports camp in June, the content of the gospel curriculum for children impacted him so greatly that he turned to the group leader and said "I now get it, I'm ready and I really want to know Him." Callum not only gave his heart to Jesus there and then but insisted that before the end of the week he stand in front of the whole camp and proclaim what he did and why and then challenged everybody to give everything to Jesus and stand up for Him. That week we saw 15 children come to know Jesus.

Partnering
- WSM combined with Scripture Union and Youth For Christ to design, develop and roll out the school mission project called 'The Games' where 135 schools and 13,000 children have been
reached in total with the good news this spring/summer.

- WSM is partnering with Fusion Community Festivals by developing materials and training leaders to add sports zones to their community festival. These have now been piloted in 2 areas
with success and there are 200 other festivals due to be staged throughout the UK this summer connected to the fever of the Olympics.

Fixture List

Please could you PRAY for the following:

  • That churches and ministries are empowered by God to use the Olympics and Paralympics to reach communities in the UK and beyond.

  • Godly connections and partnerships established to begin new Community Sports Teams throughout the UK

  • For effective 'Training of Trainers' as we prepare to serve churches by training new leaders after the games for ministry legacy.

  • For God's saving power to flow through each CST in Bristol, Bath, Newham, Plymouth and Kenya and all of their outreach and discipleship projects lined up in July & August.

  • For a huge breakthrough for WSM financially to enable the funding of the above and to grow our team of central staff and regional co-ordinators.

Wev'e added gold to our newsletter this month to get in the spirit of everything, but can I ask if you and your church are ready to offer the people of your community something that's worth way more than gold? Enjoy the games, use it to reach out and above all enjoy Jesus!

Thanks as ever for your prayer, friendship and support.
