How can we develop our response?
The Living Wage and other initiatives addressing poverty

Increasing numbers are attending food banks in the South West. In April there will be significant changes to the welfare state bringing many more people into poverty. The government has accepted that 200,000 more children will be pushed into poverty with the new changes to benefits and tax credits.

A significant proportion of the population is being affected by more than one cut in public spending as well as inflation rises in energy, food and rented housing. Poor households spend a higher percentage of their income on these things compared to average and wealthier households.

We are called to give bread to the poor, but we are also encouraged to ask why the poor have no bread. As we respond pastorally to care for people facing vulnerability, we are also called to speak prophetically and to seek social justice with them.
