How to lift an elephant in four easy steps

Remember a story in the Bristol Post back in 6 December 2012 (page 19 See below) about a female power lifter who had made a miraculous recover after life-threatening surgery?

Well, Janey Hiller, a self-supporting musician from Horfield, Bristol, has now started training for an even bigger challenge, taking place on Saturday 5th October at Risk Gymnasium on Gloucester Road.

This time, Janey will aim to lift a minimum of 5 metric tonnes (5000kg) in 30 minutes. That’s the equivalent weight of an adult bull African elephant!

Speaking about her challenge, Janey says, “As reported in the Bristol Post last year, after my surgery 18 months ago I couldn't even put my own socks on let alone lift anything! It’s amazing to me that by the grace of God I'm even walking and talking. I did my first challenge last December to mark my recovery, but since then, my strength and fitness have improved massively, and I’m ready and very excited to take on this bigger challenge.”

Janey hopes her challenge, called ‘Lift for Hope’ will raise further money for the Rock of Ages orphanage project in Uganda.

janey11She was moved by a video of the project made by her friend who is stationed there, out in Kampala. The video showed the plight of the kids orphaned by war or AIDS and how Rock of Ages has rescued them to give them love, hope and a future. The money raised so far has enabled Rock of Ages to buy the land and the next part of the plan is to start building a secure shelter so the kids don’t have to live in make-shift shelters and squats any more, exposed to the elements  disease and vermin. So Janey is back fundraising money for beds, tables, chairs, books – all the things the kids need to turn the ‘house’ into and ‘home’. (Video and photo links below).

“I really hope people will identify with something in this story, and feel moved to sponsor me." She goes on "It sounds corny to say it, but really and truly even the smallest donation will make a big difference because the money will go direct to the cause – there are no admin costs or other fees, just 100% direct funding to Rock of Ages, which is a pretty unique fundraising opportunity!”

Risk Gymnasium Manager, Nigel Wood, and Janey’s personal trainer Stu Caswell have both been full of support and encouragement for Janey’s challenge, hoping it will raise the profile of women’s involvement in the sport of strength training.
