Bristol reaches Golden heights of fundraising!

golden 5100 local people raised nearly £4000 at the Golden Ticket Gala at Armada House, to fund life changing equipment for Ugandan gold miners.

Fairtrade Gold pioneer, Greg Valerio MBE, spoke passionately about how small scale gold mining is one of the most dangerous and low-paid industries in the world, and involves 160 million people. The use of mercury in the extraction process is hugely damaging to human health and the environment.

golden -kacha 2A new machine enables gold miners to extract 4 times the amount of gold without using mercury – and Bristol raised this money at a wonderful Gala event last night to celebrate Healthy City Week.

The event included one lucky guest winning the Golden Ticket, which was hidden inside a wrapper of Divine chocolate golden Neroli neckace 2 YG(Willy Wonka style!) and won a beautiful Fairtrade Gold necklace from Liz Earle’s collection!

The event was organised by Go Green Bristol, Bristol Fairtrade and Bristol Green Capital Partnership, and sponsored by the Co-operative and Bristol jewellers, Diana Porter. Diana announced that evening that all new 9ct and 18ct gold pieces will now be made using Fairtrade Gold as standard, a massive commitment to ethical jewellery.
