A Bristol woman, who was fighting for her life last December after major surgery, has made such a miraculous recovery back to health that she is celebrating the anniversary of her operation in a rather unusual way - by taking part in a power lifting challenge for charity.

Janey Summer Hiller, a graduate of Bristol University, has been power lifting for just 8 months, and will take part in her impressive challenge on Saturday 15th December, at Risk Gymnasium in Horfield, starting at 6pm.  To complete the challenge, Janey will power lift 3.5 metric tons (3500kg) in an hour - that’s more than the weight of a fully loaded transit van.

Power lifting is a strength sport that involves lifting weights in three events:

squat, bench press and dead lift.

Janey’s challenge – called ‘Lift For Hope’ - is raising money for Rock of Ages, an orphanage project which her friend is involved with in Uganda. The money will go directly towards a new building at the orphanage, and will mean that the kids there will at last have bricks-and-mortar shelter instead of having to sleep in haulage crates.

Risk Gymnasium Manager, Nigel Wood, and Janey’s personal trainer Jamie Bidder have both given her their full support and encouragement for the challenge, and are pleased the event is taking place at Risk Gym, hoping it will raise the profile of women’s involvement in weight training.

Janey, speaking about her challenge says,

“Last year I couldn't even lift a pencil off the floor after I came out of hospital! So it’s amazing to me that by the grace of God I'm walking and talking let alone have recovered well enough to take part in such an awesome challenge – I’m so excited for this!”

The idea for the challenge came about when Janey saw a heart-moving video of the plight of the kids where her friend is stationed in Kampala. Around the same time, Janey was encouraged to set herself a personal challenge to celebrate her return to health, so she felt it would be a great idea to combine her challenge with a fundraising event.

Janey says:

“I really hope people will identify with something in my story, and feel moved to donate. It really is true to say that even the smallest donation will make a big difference because the money will go direct to the cause – there’s no admin costs or other fees, just 100% direct funding to Rock of Ages, which is a pretty unique fundraising opportunity!”
